Found this in a field next to my house. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with leather because it has three rivets on it. The rivets have a green patina.It has a hook on one end.This thing was about 15 inches in the ground.

Hi Larry,
Possibly mounted on leather as you suggested but used like a 'tie down hook' for transporting goods by horse or donkey.
You've seen them traveling with very large loads on their backs. There must have been a way of securing loads of that size.
That surely would have been the answer. Put a harness on with these things attached and 'presto', you're able to multiply
your ability to carry greater loads.

Being a motorcyclist myself, we currently use 'bungy cords' which in effect use the same principle.
Just a thought.
